Reminders: Simple steps for better and more useful videos.

  • Zoom into your interview subject so their mid-chest is at the bottom of frame and the top of their head just below the top of the frame.
  • Adequately light the subject (not back or side-lit).
  • Use a microphone that does not pick up extraneous sounds (traffic, coworkers’ voices, air-conditioners, machinery, etc.). The built in camera mike is usually only good with no other sounds around.
  • Keep only the subject’s answers - Do not include in the interviewer’s questions
  • Prompt the interview subject with further comments or questions during an interview (i.e. “How so?”, “What do mean by that?”, “Can you give me an example?”) . Do not record the interviewer asking for additional information.
  • Position the camera just to the left or right of the interviewer at eye level.
Ask the subject to look at the interviewer not the camera.
